Mass Housing: Modern Architecture and State Power – a Global History

In collaboration with Critical and Curatorial Practices in Design under the auspices of Professor Alan Pert and Professor Philip Goad, hosted by the Melbourne School of Design and ACAHUCH, In this presentation, Professor Miles Glendinning will outline the ideas, content and critical conclusions of his most recent book, Mass Housing: Modern Architecture and State Power – a Global History (Bloomsbury, 2020). This major work provides the first comprehensive history of one of modernism's most defining and controversial architectural legacies: the 20th-century drive to provide 'homes for the people'.

Professor Miles Glendinning holds the Chair of Architectural Conservation at the University of Edinburgh. An expert on twentieth century architecture and planning history and heritage, he is the author of many books, including Tower Block: Modern Public Housing in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (1994), Clone City: Crisis and Renewal in Contemporary Scottish Architecture (1999), Modern Architect: The Life and Times of Robert Matthew (2008), and The conservation movement: a history of architectural preservation: antiquity to modernity (2013).
