Missing Links: Heritage Education and Heritage Practice 2012

Missing Links Heritage Education and Heritage Practice

Room 137, Architecture Building, The University of Melbourne

A roundtable discussion hosted by the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning, University of Melbourne

Coordinator/s

Dr Cameron Logan; Assoc Prof Hannah Lewi

Presenters:

A 2010 report by Godden Mackay Logan, Latrobe University and the Donald Horne Institute commissioned by the Heritage Chairs and Officials of Australia and New Zealand (HCOANZ) found that despite significant attempts to address perceived deficiencies in both heritage trades and professional education, ongoing attention is much needed. The Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at the University of Melbourne supports the need for establishing more responsive and accessible heritage education to assist industry in achieving higher standards of practice, to promote well informed government decision-making, and to stimulate new and applied research.

A group of researchers and teachers in the Faculty of ABP, with broad-ranging and diverse expertise, are currently identifying areas of critical importance to heritage education in the future and investigating how innovative practice can inform further development of heritage education approaches. This one day roundtable solicited input from a range of stakeholders in industry, government, civic bodies and academia.

The event was planned around three linked objectives:

1) To discuss the findings and implications of the GML/Latrobe University/Donald Horne Institute report on heritage education and industry training

2) To profile a select sample of innovative recent conservation projects that highlight the vital conjunction of heritage practice and education

3) To establish a productive forum for discussing teaching and research methods required to support and renew heritage and conservation education in the near future
