The Miles Lewis Fellowship in Architectural History

The Miles Lewis Fellowship is intended to support the discipline of architectural history in Australia by bringing to the country an internationally recognised scholar in the field. It is hosted by the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at the University of Melbourne, and is supported by the Society of Architectural Historians Australia and New Zealand. It is funded by the Vera Moore Foundation.

The Fellowship is dedicated to architectural history (including architectural archaeology and industrial archaeology). The Fellow will engage in an agreed program consisting of any or all of (a) research, writing and travel, (b) teaching activities, and (c) public activities, and will also deliver the Miles Lewis Oration.

Fellowship Support

The Fellowship provides comprehensive support for a residency of between 3 weeks to 3 months in Australia (the majority of this time usually in Melbourne). Fellows may apply for up to 6 months.

It provides:

  • An international airfare to and from Melbourne (travel costs for accompanying partners or guests are arranged independently).
  • Visa fees (if applicable).
  • Accommodation during the fellow’s stay.
  • Travel expenses for an agreed program of activity within Australia.
  • A pro rata stipend allowance.
  • An honorarium to be paid when the text of the Oration is delivered.

The Miles Lewis Oration

The Oration is a public address in which the Fellow treats major issues within the discipline of architectural history in a manner accessible also to a broader scholarly audience.  It is published as a monograph at or after the time of delivery.

About Miles Lewis

A lasting contribution to architectural history

Professor Miles Lewis AM is an internationally recognised architectural historian whose work explores the relationship between technology, culture and the built environment. His research has made significant contributions to the understanding of architectural history, vernacular traditions and the evolution of building technology.

Through his scholarship, teaching and advocacy, Professor Lewis has played an influential role in advancing the study and appreciation of architecture and heritage in Australia and internationally. He was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Humanities in 1988 and appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2002 for his contributions to architectural history, heritage protection and urban planning.

There is no formal application process for the fellowship. The Committee welcomes expressions of interest. These can be received at any time.

Key dates

The Fellowship Standing Selection Advisory Committee is currently considering potential candidates for the 2028 Fellow to visit the University within the period of March - November 2028. The Committee is also open to potential candidates with interest beyond 2028.
