Dr Katti Williams features in 'The Story of the Road' documentary on SBS

ACAHUCH Post-Doctoral Researcher, Dr Katti Williams, provides expert historical knowledge on the longest war memorial built by returned servicemen, The Great Ocean Road.

The Great Ocean Road, beloved as a gateway to the coast for surf-hungry Victorians, a pleasure drive for twist-craving petrol-heads, and the scene for summer holidays, winter beach breaks, and hordes of tourists, carries a fascinating history and premise for its existence.

In order to provide means for the thousands of servicemen returning from the battlefields of WWI, and to commemorate the lives of those lost during battle, The Great Ocean Road serves as a reminder to those who know of the commitment, tenacity, and effort employed by these servicemen and civilians over its 13-year construction period, and this message serves as the basis for 'The Story of the Road'.

The documentary, created by Clothesline Content, explores the Road's rich history, both recent and past, and highlights the cues that make it the spine of a community that stretches right down the Victorian coastline. Featuring Dr Williams' incisive commentary on the role that these servicemen played in the physical and cultural heritage of the towns built along The Great Ocean Road and greater Victoria. She also participated in a Live Q&A on Facebook after the documentary's airing featuring filmakers Jacqueline Tonks, Claire Falkiner and Vice President of the Lorne Historical Society, Peter Spring.

The documentary was facilitated as a centenary project by Clothesline Content, on behalf of the Colac Otway Shire, Surf Coast Shire, Lorne Business and Tourism Association, Business and Tourism Anglesea, Apollo Bay Chamber of Commerce and Regional Roads Victoria, was funded by the Department of Premier and Cabinet, Visit Victoria's Regional Events fund, and Visit Victoria's Regional Events and Innovation Fund.
